Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) comes from a collaboration of UNICEF and the World Health Organization to increase breastfeeding support in maternity hospitals. Baby-Friendly USA, the US certifying body, states that achieving certification ultimately helps mothers gain knowledge about lactation health.
According to Step 2 of their updated guidelines, hospitals require 20 hours of maternity training with a focus on breastfeeding education. The nursing staff receives higher quality education when hands-on, realistic, education tools are available during this training. The LiquidGoldConcept Lactation Simulation Model (LSM) can help staff gain essential breastfeeding skills such as hand expression of breastmilk, setting up and using a breast pump, and managing common complications such as plugged ducts and engorgement.
